Think British style and you’ll be forgiven to think that it’s a posh, stuffy and altogether staid affair. Suits are key to any man’s wardrobe but whereas suits in North America are a symbol of power, for British men, it’s about tradition. It is after all, home to Savile Row, where suits have been cut, fit and made for hundreds of years and where tailors are revered for age-old techniques.
However in recent years, British men have begun to redefine their nation’s style, without forgetting their besuited heritage. Model David Gandy leads the pack with a gentlemanly wardrobe of suiting for every occasion, while Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton cuts a sharp figure in carefully tailored suits.
Menswear designer Paul Smith has also taken innovative steps towards dynamic suit construction with ’A Suit to Travel In’. Designed to be a travel suit, it's made from crease-resistant and water repellant wool yarn. Presented in the London collections during Mens Fashion Week, the suit was put through its paces by Olympic gymnast Max Whitlock, proving that it is made for action and movement.
