In the lead up to the opening of our revolutionary Bondi Junction Food Hall, we talk to Neil Perry about his involvement with David Jones Food, and all things fresh.
What was the attraction of the David Jones food brand?
David Jones is Australia’s oldest department store, steeped in history… It’s one of our country’s icons. It was a huge honour to be approached by David Jones to help transform their food business.
How do you personally align with the brand?
We share the same values when it comes to food quality, provenance and sustainability, and we aspire to excellence in our offerings. We both want to create world-class food experiences that delight our customers.
What is the new food experience all about?
It’s about the complete offering. Many people like to break up a day of shopping with food and meet with friends over coffee and cake, sushi, salad or a great sandwich, or simply a glass of champagne and some oysters, and David Jones is the perfect destination.
What major initiatives have you implemented so far?
A new purpose-designed, fully-integrated food area has launched at David Jones in Bondi Junction, which will be rolled out over time to other stores nationwide. It will feature a range of new concepts, yet to be revealed! Think Asian Bar for sashimi, stir-fries, noodles and rice; Grill Bar for dry-aged beef and the best chicken schnitzel or minute-steak sandwiches; The Kitchen for a healthy breakfast, antipasto, pizza and pasta; and the Oyster Bar for some of the country’s best oysters, prawns and seafood classics. There will also be some great Food To Go including our favourite sandwich combinations, rotisserie meats and fabulous fresh salads.
