Christmas with the Elsoms

If ever there was an award for the most stylish Australian family, the Elsoms would be at the top of our list. Stylist and founder of the blog Captain and the Gypsy Kid, Sheree Commerford is the mum behind this brood (dad is designer Sam Elsom), and whose great style and creativity clearly runs in the family. Fun and whimsical with a touch of the bohème, the Elsoms are as idyllic as the life they lead in their beachside home in Sydney.

We chat to Sheree on how she celebrates Christmas with her family, and her favourite Christmas recipe.

Where is your favourite place to spend Christmas?

My favourite place to spend Christmas is at my parents' farm. It is the house I grew up in and so the traditions we do as a family over Christmas are still the same. Being with my brother and sister at this time of year at our family home also transports me back to being a child. Sharing these same traditions with Sugar, Captain and Sam is everything to me.

Do you have a favourite Christmas dish?

My mother’s chocolate spiders are my favourite Christmas treat; she only makes them at Christmas, which makes them even more delicious!

Here's how to make them:
Melt 200 grams of chocolate (dark chocolate is my favourite for these) and 2 tablespoons of crunchy peanut butter on a low heat until completely melted. Add 1 packet of crunchy fried noodles and mix well. On a tray, spoon the mixture into small rounds shaped like spiders and put them into the fridge until set.

What's your favourite Christmas memory?

I cried the first time Sugar had her photo with Santa. She was only four weeks old and six weeks premature and here she was, just a gumnut curled up on Santa’s arm. The most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I cry thinking about it even now.
Meet Santa at your nearest David Jones store.

Do you have any unique traditions for celebrating Christmas?

In our little seaside village, we live on the 'Christmas lights' street, so we decorate our house in lights from the beginning of December.  For two weeks before bedtime, our children walk the street looking at all the light displays in our neighbours' front yards and get excited about Santa arriving. On Christmas Eve we sit on our front deck with friends and chat to everyone walking the street looking at the lights.

What’s on your Christmas wish list this year?

Fun, love, happiness, sun, sleep and laughter.
