On the night of Wednesday 27 July, something special was happening in Lambton Quay in the heart of Wellington, NZ. After months of preparation, the refurbishment of the site where the former Kirkcaldie & Stains store once stood is finally complete and David Jones is about to unveil its first international department store.
Read on for an insider look at the opening events for the new David Jones Wellington store:
The old Kirks site is reinvigorated with a new world-class department store.
The beloved heritage facade of the old Kirkcaldie & Stains store (affectionately called Kirks by the locals) has been preserved, and many Kiwis were heartened to see Neville Wellbourn still manning the grand doors at the launch event, held on the eve of the official store opening, resplendent and dapper in an elegant black suit and top hat. But there's signs of an exciting new beginning in the air as the store was awash in lights for the VIP-only night, the elegant black carpet was rolled out and the iconic David Jones logo proudly beaming amongst it all.
The special launch event hosted a gathering of the top Antipodean celebrities and personalities.
NZ Prime Minister John Key was one of the VIP who attended the opening night. “It’s a been a night of firsts, New Zealand.’ remarked one journalist, as never had a prime minister been at such an event before. He was joined by David Jones ambassador Jessica Gomes, shimmering in a silver Camilla and Marc gown, local celebrity Jamie Ridge, All Blacks star Julian Savea and wife Fatima, homegrown designers Karen Walker and Trelise Cooper, and singer Ladyhawke who performed an acoustic set on the night.
Kiwis will no longer have to travel overseas to get their designer fix.
Inside the Wellington store is a beautiful and contemporary shopping environment with inspiring spaces and dynamic merchandise displays featuring international brands, never before available in NZ, that will be sure to excite the fashionable style set of New Zealand. Expect the most covetable bags and accessories from Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, and Saint Laurent, fine jewellery from Kailis Pearls and Monica Vinader, and cosmetics from Tom Ford, Benefit and Aesop.
Hundreds queued as the new store officially opened its doors at 9am.
On opening day as Jessica Gomes and David Jones CEO officiated over the ribbon-cutting ceremony, hundreds of shoppers flooded into the store, and were treated to free treats and coffee, fashion parades and special opening day offers.
Shoppers will love the premium-level shopping services provided by the in-store Concierge.
Those needing beauty advice, shopping tips or need help with a gift now have somewhere to go. The new store also offers complimentary Concierge services and has a team of knowledgeable Beauty Advisors and Personal Shoppers to help with all types of shopping needs. Best of all, there's an in-store cafe to relax in once the shopping spree is over!
