Ever heard of the NDAs? If the names Dion Lee or Macgraw sound familiar, let’s just say this year’s winner of the prestigious award is in very good company. The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF) yesterday crowned Kacey Devlin the 2017 winner of the National Designer Award, presented by David Jones and supported by Harper’s BAZAAR. Having launched her label KACEY/DEVLIN in 2014, Devlin was nominated alongside five other Australian design talents: Lois Hazel, Exifinitas, Anna Quan, Third Form and Kloke.

Celebrating its 21st year of design excellence in 2017, the NDA recognises promising designers in the early stages of their business. All nominees exhibit an excellence in creative design and quality, demonstrating the potential for growth and development within the industry. Proven by the accomplishments of NDA’s distinguished alumni, including MacGraw, STRATEAS.CARLUCCI, Dion Lee, and Romance Was Born, the National Design Award really is the launch pad du jour for far-reaching industry success.

Since founding her label, Devlin has already established herself as someone with a distinctive approach to design. In the words of Devlin herself, her clothing aims to create a space where we’re no longer passive consumers, but rather active co-creators. Complementing the label’s conceptual approach is an underlying practicality, firmly grounded in wearability and quality construction. It is this attention to detail, this constant striving for design ingenuity, which the NDA aims to celebrate.

As this year’s award winner, Devlin will receive a high-value business development prize pack valued in excess of AUD $100,000, to acknowledge her significant contribution to the Australian fashion industry, and to provide resources to assist with the development of KACEY/DEVLIN into the future. The designer’s award-winning collection will also feature in this year’s much-anticipated Gala Runway, to be presented by David Jones on the 14th of March.

VAMFF CEO Graeme Lewsey said he was proud to identify and enable excellence within the nation’s fashion industry, and to contribute to the future of the Australian design industry with this revered award.

“For over two decades the Festival has supported Australia’s design talent, assisting in their growth through professional mentoring, providing unsurpassed networking opportunities and financial support. This year the calibre of finalists was extremely high, proving Australia’s design industry continues to thrive.  Kacey Devlin embodies what this Award stands for - design innovation and creativity,” Mr Lewsey said.

David Collins, Group Executive – Merchandise at David Jones, is pleased to present this year’s award at the festival, and looks forward to being involved in the evolution of KACEY/DEVLIN.

“David Jones is a proud supporter of Australian fashion and we are thrilled to be the presenting partner of this highly esteemed Award as part of the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.

“We congratulate Kacey Devlin, and look forward to assisting her to develop and progress as a brand both nationally and globally,” Collins said.

Designer Kacey Devlin said that the award marked a wonderful start to the year.

“Being a finalist is a win in itself. Taking out this win has kicked 2017 off to a nice start. The Award will provide an incredible platform to help my brand expand…”

This year’s winner was announced at a VIP presentation yesterday morning, held at David Jones Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne. Having watched previous NDA winners shine both locally and abroad, we can’t wait to see what lies ahead for Kacey Devlin.
