Runway Report: S/S 2015 Fashion Launch

Synthesizers, drum kits, bass guitars and electric keyboards in front of a large backlit stage — this was what guests first saw as they took their seats at the David Jones Spring Summer 2015 Fashion Launch. So it was a surprise to no one when Daniel Johns strode out on stage with his band and started to sing "We are Golden," his new hit track and the soundtrack to the David Jones #ShotbySound campaign for the new season. It was a sublime start to an electrifying show full of the best of Australian designer fashion.

Opening the show was Kit Willow's new eco-label KitX, with David Jones ambassadors Jessica Gomes dressed in a vibrant, floor-sweeping burnt orange silk top and skirt, and Montana Cox in a draped skirt with an on-trend tie front detail. This set the scene for a glam gypsy look with subtle references to the '70s, with peasant-style maxi dresses from Zimmermann and ethnic prints from Tigerlily. The theme continued with exaggerated flare details from Ellery, the brand's signature silhouette, and a cream suit by Ginger & Smart reminiscent of Bianca Jagger of that era.

Black and white was another strong trend but it's anything but basic. Cue Jesinta Campbell's arresting entrance on the catwalk in a Bec & Bridge bikini, which drew cheers from the crowd. Also joining the graphic parade were bold monochrome prints from Manning Cartell, Josh Goot, and Romance was Born. For the purists, there were all-white pieces from Lee Mathews and Alice McCall, including a beautiful white dress by Dion Lee, as well as very wearable black separates from Rebecca Vallance, Christopher Esber, and Strateas Carlucci

Spring summer also means the party season is afoot and there were plenty of gorgeous dresses from Carla Zampatti, Bianca Spender and Camilla and Marc for the social set. Ranging from fun and flirty cocktail dresses to dramatic floor length gowns, the woman about town is set to be dressed in Australian designer finery.

Attuned to the sartorial sensibilities of Australian men, menswear was kept smart casual with tailored suit separates from Calibre and Jack London, alongside more relaxed pieces from Zanerobe and Bassike

And it won't be the spring summer without new season swimwear — models with tanned limbs, courtesy of Ella Bache, strode out in Isola's neon florals and one piece designs, followed by Tigerlily's indigo blue bikini separates. The Camilla tribe was equal parts ethereal and edgy, dressed in the brand's new My Wandering Heart collection.

As the show drew to a close, all of the models, in Bonds-esque black and white swimwear by JETS, strode out onto the runway. "The city's on fire," crooned Daniel Johns in his closing song as Jessica Gomes led a supermodel squad of Montana Cox, Jesinta Campbell and Alexandra Agoston in sexy cut-out swimwear — consider your spring summer fashion lit.
