“For those of you who think you’ve walked into a gay bar…you’re still at David Jones!” drag queen performer Candy Box greeted the large and cheering crowd.
That was the atmosphere at the David Jones Mardi Gras celebration on Thursday, 3 March as drag queens, shirtless waiters, and a troupe of roller skaters mingled and partied at the Elizabeth St and Market St stores in Sydney. Shoppers were treated to rainbow cakes and champagne, and were invited to take part Mardi Gras style with glitter beard stations by Aveda, OPI nail bars, and a confetti-themed photo booth, whilst listening to the hottest DJ acts from the LGBTQI party scene.
Headlining the event was Australian transgender icon Carlotta, who had partnered with David Jones for a special collaboration in support of the upcoming 2016 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. A window dresser at David Jones prior to her transformative surgery, Carlotta returned to dress the windows once more, turning them into a proud display of Mardi Gras pride with each one themed to each colour of the LGBTIQ’s rainbow flag as part of the collaboration.
And on Thursday night, the LGBTQI community came out in force to see Carlotta’s special performance starting with a poignant rendition of “As Time Goes By” commemorating the 78ers who had led and suffered at Sydney’s first Mardi Gras in 1978. Ever the performer, Carlotta then had everyone clapping along as she closed with a classic cabaret song, “The Lady is a Tramp,” setting a joyous and upbeat mood for the rest of the night. Drag queen performers Minnie Cooper, Amelia Airhead and Prada Clutch also presented their own electrifying acts closing off a very memorable night at David Jones.
