Get the scoop on MBFWA through the eyes of our womenswear buying manager, Teneille Ferguson.
What do you love most about Mercedes Benz Fashion Week?
I love the variety that the week offers. It’s a wonderful opportunity to really showcase Australian Fashion and really let the creativity of our talented local designers shine.
What key womenswear trends have you seen coming out of MBFWA this year?
The romantic trend with lots of ruffles and frills is still really prominent throughout a lot of collections. I also loved the variety of colour; it’s a nice change from the monochromatic palette of last year. This week I saw a lot of red in quite a few collections, so I know this is going to be a huge colour for SS17.
Were there any standout shows for you at this year’s event?
My favourite show was KITX as I thought the collection was a great balance of commercial and creative. I also loved Alice McCall as it felt like true Resort wear and I loved the new silhouettes. Macgraw’s showing was amazing too; their brand has such a unique personality, and the show was so high energy!
What Australian designers are you particularly excited about right now?
I really love KITX; her aesthetic is very cool but also easy to embrace. I also think Hansen & Gretel is one to watch – I loved their interpretation of Resort, their mix of prints was really dynamic and fun.
How do you dress for fashion week? Any favourite looks for attending shows?
Dressing for fashion week can be very stressful but I am lucky that I have so many amazing designers to choose from. I always want to make a statement, but my outfits also need to be practical, as there are busy days. My fave look that I wore this week was the Aje runway dress from their Resort collection.
What’s the one item every woman needs in her wardrobe?
A killer blazer or jacket is a must. The tailoring trend is really strong next season so a blazer is a good addition to any woman’s wardrobe, to be worn as a suit or over a dress. You can find some great options at KITX and Bianca Spender, and I also love Rebecca Vallance and Camilla & Marc for blazers.
