When Jesinta Campbell stepped out on the runway at the David Jones A/W 2016 Fashion Launch in a floor-length, body-skimming black gown, the fashion elite in attendance couldn't help but stare. As she sashayed down the catwalk, she looked as elegant and graceful as a modern day Audrey Hepburn.
The designer behind this dress is Aurelio Costarella
, a Perth-born, award-winning designer who's made his name creating gowns and evening dresses worthy of red carpet events and extra-special formal occasions. Here we chat with Aurelio on his latest collection (new this season to David Jones) and what is it about his designs that make a woman feel beautiful.
It's your first season as part of the David Jones designer family. How do you feel?
I'm very excited! It was amazing to be part of Fashion Launch and I really feel that the David Jones shopper is very much aligned with the Aurelio Costarella customer.
Tell us about your latest collection. What was the inspiration behind it?
I have a background in architecture and I often use architectural elements in my designs combined with themes from nature. For Autumn/Winter 2016, I was inspired by the art deco period and the feminine shapes of petals and other floral forms. This came through in the black and white graphic prints I designed for the collection, as well as the the trumpet silhouettes of the gowns. There's also bold teals and berry hues, which draw on the vibrant colours of flowers.
What is it about your designs that make a woman feel beautiful?
Looking beautiful is about being confident, and as a designer, it's my job to create pieces that make women feel confident. I put in a lot of attention and detail to each design, and women who appreciate the quality behind each piece will know how to make it their own.
