The best 3 moments of Paris Fashion Week

From retro femininity at Chloé, to Valentino’s Victorian era elegance, Paris Fashion Week’s eight-day line-up did not disappoint. Delivering some of this season’s most stunning Autumn Winter collections, the last of the “big four” fashion weeks offered a comprehensive preview of the cooler months ahead: think sophisticated prints, experimental tailoring, and reimagined silhouettes.

As we await our new season international arrivals, we’ve emerged from our Paris-induced sartorial reverie to share three of our favourite moments from the week.

Chloé

In the words of designer Clare Waight Keller, this season the Chloé girl escaped down a rabbit hole of decades, far into a dream world of psychedelic optimism. This theme translated to a collection infused with 1960s girlish charm – short pinafore dresses, soft blouses with pussy-bows and dresses in intricate florals, with hyper-feminine billowing sleeves. Juxtaposed against this picture-book aesthetic were a few statement looks of a more masculine kind: baggy, hip-slung trousers worn with bomber jackets, workmen-style jumpsuits and a dark brown suede tracksuit. Patent Mary Janes completed most looks, cementing the collection’s fairy-tale undertones.

As though emerging straight from the pages of a Jane Austen novel, Valentino’s Autumn Winter collection embodied a certain neo-Victorian era charm. The look was balanced with a harder, more contemporary edge, with models floating down the runway in floor length floral tunics and smocks of tiered chiffon; stud-embellished handbags hanging at their sides. Throughout the show, the Victorian silhouette also featured across modern geo-prints, soft salmon tones and playful raspberry reds. Knee-length leather boots anchored the collection’s nod to eras past, in shades of pastel, raspberry and black.

For Autumn Winter 2017 Balenciaga delivered a reimagining of the female silhouette. Inspired by three decades of the fashion house’s archives, Creative Director Demna Gvasalia presented his own take on power dressing, with ensembles combining conservative with cool. Traditionally tailored jackets and coats were substituted for styles of a more abstract variety, featuring asymmetric fastenings that slightly skewed the silhouette. In keeping with the theme of new-age corporate chic, panels cut from the rubber mattings of car interiors were used in pencil skirts, worn with tight turtleneck knits and brightly coloured pointed-toe stilettos. Wing mirror clutch bags and excessively oversized totes were among other accessories used to punctuate the collection, enhancing the designer’s deliberate play on shape and proportion.
