Hours away from the start of the David Jones SS16 Collections Launch, Deborah Bibby, Editor-in-Chief of the soon to launch JONES magazine, takes us behind-the-scenes for a sneak peek at what to expect from the show.
Inside a rather bland building numbered Stage 7 at Fox Studios the creators, designers, models, photographers, artists and rare birds have gathered.
My first Collections Launch for David Jones and I’ve snuck into the rehearsals – completely excited. The runway, glossy black reflecting like a pool of black water. The music is loud, I mean really loud. I seriously want to strut down the runway – it’s drawing me like a magnet but I know that would be a personal fashion disaster. I contain my inner disco (even though it’s like a firecracker has gone off within). Romance was Born signature glorious, cray-cray designs caught the corner of my eye first – a lolly wrapper pink bomber jacket with embroidery and pink metallic pleated skirt. Racks of metallics, florals, ruffles, sparkle and glorious floaty Zimmerman dresses (tagged my favourite, a definite must-have). Models running bare, models gathered in clusters on the floor chatting and nibbling on bags of mixed nuts, delicious shoes lines up like soldiers ready for battle. Particularly fell in love with a pair of pink toe capped glittery boots. The buzz of activity – the band warming up. Seriously, the season starts here and there’s a whole summer’s worth going on backstage.
Behind the parachute-like curtains I met three of the rare birds, Jess Gomes in suede knee-high boots and a gorgeous Dion Lee coat, Jesinta Campbell in adorable shiny, black loafers, and Montana Cox wearing a caramel cashmere jumper. I could not stop looking at them, they are equally exquisite. We had some fun with Snapchat and found out that Jesinta prefers leather to lace, one piece versus bikini; and Jess, if she only had one cosmetic to choose from, it would be ‘mascara over lipstick’. Then they walked. Okay I get it, I get why they are the rare birds.
Lee Mathew’s delicate pale blue dress and her linen tunic over pants were both scene stealers at rehearsal and that’s seeing them without the drama and decoration of hair and makeup. Carla Zampatti, Camilla, Bianca Spender, Akira, Kit X, Jac & Jack, Rachel Gilbert, Rebecca Vallance, Christopher Esber, Ellery, Camilla & Marc, Ginger and Smart, Alice McCall, Bassike and Lover – all had something to love. Dare to wear – that’s my new motto! I just hope I can contain myself tonight, well contain the urge to tackle the runway model in that Zimmermann dress. It’s going to be an oh-so-exquisite affair!
JONES magazine launches 15 August 2016.
