Airport Chic

Gigi Hadid and Heidi Klum show expert 'airport chic' style.

Mid-year is typically when Australia becomes a veritable revolving door. It's halfway through winter and you're tired of rugging up, perhaps you're even expecting a generous tax return, or maybe you're getting major FOMO looking at the Facebook photos of your friends' summer shenanigans in L.A., NYC, London, or anywhere in the northern hemisphere — whatever our reason or excuse, hundreds of thousands of us Australians fly out for a holiday around this time of year.

But with most destinations requiring at least 5 hours to fly to, we're spending a lot of time in airports, airplanes and stopover cities in between, and probably looking a little worse for wear in the process.

Want to look airport chic, like Gigi Hadid and Heidi Klum pictured above? Use our style guide for the perfect travel outfit:

  • 1

    A pair of dark sunnies

No celebrity is seen without a pair of dark sunnies on as they exit the airport. Pop on these flattering round-shaped Christian Dior sunnies to hide sleep-deprived eyes.

    A structured coat

When the rest of your outfit is relaxed, look pulled together with a soft structured coat like this Loch coat from Jac + Jack. It has soft tailoring, perfect for propping on your shoulders, but is made from a soft merino-angora blend to give you enough warmth on the plane.

    A wide scarf or wrap

We're not saying pashminas are making a comeback but there's a reason why they're popular with the jetset crowd. Get a modern version like this Sheridan Whitely wrap, which can act as a scarf or shawl but is wide enough to be used as a blanket for overnight flights.

    Comfy jeans

Like Gigi and Heidi, we’re a fan of jeans when travelling. They go with everything (you’re bound to wear jeans wherever you’re travelling to) and they hold their shape after a long flight. Try a slim cut boyfriend jean like Current/Elliot’s The Fling jeans, which has a relaxed style and a cropped length, perfect when worn with flat shoes.

    Easy slip-on shoes

You don’t want to be the one holding up customs with your fiddly laced-up shoes. Wear these bright slip-on shoes from Stuart Weitzman with thick rubber soles and you’ll glide straight through — and leave the heels to the celebrities.

    A large satchel

This Kate Spade Cobble Hill Ella bag is the perfect travel purse; it’s large enough (with adjustable gusset width) to hold your magazines, two handle option so you can wear it on your shoulder or cross-body, and it has a soft slouchy shape so it can easily fit under your seat.
