Collections Launch 2017: runway wrap up

Runway silhouette of model

Styled by the Fashion Director of JONES Magazine, Thelma McQuillan, and headlined by American supermodel Karlie Kloss, last night’s David Jones Collections Launch was a treat to the sartorial senses. It was an evening of fashion, of fanfare, and of scribbling wardrobe wish lists in the shadows of runway lights.

The set

Maximising the location’s grandeur, guests were seated in a transparent marquee enjoying last night’s Autumn Winter Collections Launch against the backdrop of the night sky and Sydney’s iconic St Mary’s Cathedral. A setting as striking as the fashion on display, the landmark venue was also host to a cast of talented performers, with dancers taking to the prominent water features of the Cathedral’s precinct to entertain guests before the main event.

A reflection of this year’s Autumn Winter campaign centred on living outside the seasons, the breathtaking set was also brought to life with simulated seasonal shifts of wind and rain throughout the show.

The models

International modeling sensation Karlie Kloss, along with David Jones Ambassadors Jessica Gomes, Jesinta Campbell, and Jason Dundas, led 46 of the world’s most celebrated faces, including international talents Bridget Malcom and Charlee Fraser.

In keeping with its strong heritage of discovering new modeling talent, last night’s show also featured a fair few ‘faces to watch’, including Zoe Barnard, Yifan Zhang, and Bridget Hollitt.

The music

The show featured an enchanting soundtrack, designed to traverse both time and place. Directed by Jonny Seymour – long-time friend and collaborator of David Jones – the music and sound effects were crafted from a range of unique remixes spanning multiple genres.

As they admired the fashions of the new season, guests enjoyed the sounds of heritage artists such as Grace Jones, The Bee Gees and Leonard Cohen. Iconic female performers Solange, Goldfrapp and Austra also featured, as well as contemporary artists Paul Mac and Flume.

Ending on an unforgettable note, the show closed to the sounds of the late George Michael, a touching tribute to the beloved music icon.

The fashion

Featuring 194 exits, and 47 brands, last night’s Collections Launch featured the crème de le crème of the men’s and womenswear due to delight shoppers in the seasons to come.

Exclusive Australian brands on show included Macgraw, Romance Was Born, Zimmermann, Manning Cartell and Camilla, as well as Ellery, Christopher Esber, and Viktoria & Woods. Jac + Jack, Sabatini and Lee Mathews were also featured, along with Akira, Dion Lee, and Bassike.

Because it wouldn’t be a Collections Launch without a dash of intercontinental intrigue, some of the very best international designers were also on display, including the likes of Céline, Balenciaga, and Saint Laurent. Onlookers were also treated to the upcoming collections of Valentino, Alexander Wang, and Versace.

For the first time in the show’s history, last night’s Collections Launch closed with a breathtaking bridal display, featuring Reem Acra, Self Portrait, Monique Lhuillier, Temperley, Carolina Herrera, Rachel Gilbert, and the unforgettable Oscar de la Renta.
