While most of us instinctively gravitate towards black when the sunny days of summer come to an end, the beauty of burgundy lies in its similar versatility yet infinitely richer quality as a dark neutral. Teamed alongside some Victoriana-inspired pieces — another trend this season I previously spoke to — this oxblood shade, or marsala by another name, will make for a dramatic autumnal wardrobe.
Look towards Veronika Maine
and Rebecca Vallance
for bold workwear pieces that will make a powerful statement in the office. Paired with a crisp white shirt or a navy knit, burgundy really comes into its own. Rebecca Vallance's leather pieces are my personal picks, whether it be the edgy moto jacket or brilliant short-sleeved leather dress in a work-appropriate midi length. It's a sign of our modern times that leather has become an elevated option for daytime and workwear.
When it comes to evening wear, cocktail dresses and gowns have long been made in this reddish-brown hue, a testament to its flattering nature for most skin tones. This season, we see Australian designer brand Manning Cartell and Lover create beautiful burgundy dresses in sheer and lace in equally dramatic silhouettes. Contemporary label Shona Joy is another brand who has embraced this colour trend this season, offering very wearable and affordable dresses for evening affairs.
Finally, I would be amiss to omit the powerful statement a dark red lip makes. Be it in matte or glossy, the cooler months are the perfect time for a bold beauty look.
