Merchandise Director Donna Player shares her thoughts on the trends and key pieces of the A\W 2016 season.
Performance and fashion are both timeless expressions of individuality so it was only natural we celebrate this season through dance for our A\W 2016 campaign. Creativity and energy are driving forces here at David Jones and the collections we have selected this season are by far our most dynamic yet, not just for its style and sophistication but for its exhilarating promise to inspire and transform.
So to mark the moment, we are bringing some of the most compelling runway trends to life with a celebration of fashion, dance and music in collaboration with the Sydney Dance Company. You must watch our campaign film and read on for my take on the season.
Trends of the seasons
Whether it’s classic Victoriana, cool androgyny or a 21st-century take on ’70s mod, movement highlights the elegance and verve of every look. This season, trends traverse across past eras and exotic lands.
The Victorian period, known for championing modesty and femininity, steps into the spotlight this season with high frilled necklines, tiered lace and voluminous sleeves. Read about the Victoriana trend's modern dress codes. Burgundy is undoubtedly this season's key colour trend and its beauty lies in its similar versatility yet infinitely richer quality as a dark neutral. Find out how you can inject a hint of decadence and refinement in your wardrobe this season with this colour trend.
Artisanal textures and quirky combinations help capture the authentic mood of the '70s with the return of timeless retro colours and loose, free-spirited shapes. Bright colours and intricate patterns reminiscent of the Far East will appeal to your inner nomadic muse, while a newfound confidence in timeless monochromatic dressing extend the appeal of the androgynous trend.
Menswear is not so much dramatic as stylishly functional. Whether it's braving the wild or wandering the city, rugged types can tap into their adventurous side with casual, layered looks. Sensible and stylish, our modern male can look to a neutral palette and pared-back basics, with an option of upping the ante with daring colour combinations and luxurious fabrications of velvet and plaid as his point of difference.
Fashion that moves to the cadence of modern life are the most liberating and this season, there is a fresh line-up of new designers entering stage left. This season we welcome rising New York label Tome and its unique brand of wearable femininity crafted by Australian expats Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin. Perth couturier Aurelio Costarella and New Zealand favourite, Zambesi also step up alongside cult international diffusion line See By Chloé. And with a flourish worthy of an industry doyenne, we usher in the bold colours and charming prints of Italian luxury fashion label Marni. For winter we have secured some of the most sought-after accessories brands too, including Rebecca Minkoff bags, Stella McCartney sunglasses and A-list blogger Chiara Ferragni’s footwear. And then there’s the exciting arrival of men’s surf lifestyle brands Saturdays NYC and Kelly Slater’s Outerknown. With such an inspiring composition, the possibilities are boundless.
This season, David Jones invites you to move to your own beat and celebrate the greatness within.
