The Dish on Denim

With denim season upon us, we asked denim experts from brands like J Brand, Nudie, and Diesel to dish on their bestsellers, what's trending this season, and the jean style that they wish would just go away.

'White Story' by Frame Denim See More

What are the new denim trends we should look out for this season?

J Brand: '70s influence in a high rise fit with a slick flare bottom. This style is incredibly flattering on the body, slimming the figure while elongating your legs and oozing style and sophistication.

Frame: White story! Head to toe tonal white dressing in winter is a key look this season.

Neuw: Worn denim looks that give a real 'just pulled on from the bedroom floor' feel.

Diesel: Bleaching, whites and contrast indigo lots of paint splatters along with ripped and repaired.

Describe the most popular style of jeans for your brand, and how would you style it?

J Brand: The Maria, a high rise super skinny jean that sits perfectly on the stomach and pulls in the tummy while lifting the bottom. Wear it with an Equipment silk shirt with sneakers, pumps or boots.

Frame: Le Color Rip skinny jean. Torn denim has proven that it is no longer associated with being a solely ‘grungy’ look. We style ours with cotton man-style shirts and slightly oversized boyfriend sweaters to create an understated cool style.

Neuw: The Marilyn Skinny, based on the style of jeans worn by the '50s style icon Marilyn Monroe. The beauty about the Marilyn is that you can style it in so many different ways, depending on what look you are after. It looks sexy and modern with a shirt tucked in and heels, relaxed and sporty in a crop length with trainers and a boyfriend tee, or you can channel a more slick vintage vibe with a leather biker jacket and boots.

Current/Elliot: The Fling, the slim boyfriend jean.  Its best cuffed and slouchy with a perfect button up or layered tees.  I love to wear mine big and roll the waistband so they sit higher while still being super slouchy and ridiculously comfortable.

Nudie: Our ‘dry’ jeans, like the Skinny Lin men's jeans. The term ‘dry’ means the jeans have never touched water before and are in the beginning stages of wearing in a pair of jeans. As you wear them in, they will continue to fade, shape to your body and become your own unique pair of jeans with personalised wear marks.

What style of jeans do you wish would go away?

J Brand: A 2 inch fly and having to hold our pants up to sit down.

Current/Elliot: The jegging or any other skin tight, sprayed on fit.  No one should ever be able to confuse a legging with a jean!

Diesel: Bootcut.

What’s the most common mistake people make when buying jeans?

J Brand: Buying a pair of jeans too tight. French women are some of the most stylish in the world, known for a more relaxed, carefree style and they wear their jeans slightly looser than tighter. I think it's such a great look.

Neuw: There is a perception that you run the risk of buying your jeans too big, fearing that jeans will ' stretch out'. Most people end up buying stretcht jeans that are too small, and then stretching it to its absolute max.

Diesel: Playing it safe… try something new, be brave!

Nudie: Don’t over think it.
