How to pick the perfect bridesmaid dress

Choosing your bridesmaids' dresses could be tricky. Unless you're thinking kaftans, there's rarely a dress that is one size — or for that matter, style — fits all. We ask Amsale Amberra, designer and founder of Amsale, one of the world's leading luxury bridal groups, for advice on trends and tips for the perfect dress for your bridesmaids.

What should brides look out for when picking out their bridesmaids’ dresses?
They should consider their bridal party and girls' varying body types.  At Amsale, we have created a very diverse line of silhouettes, including dresses with straps for women with a fuller bust or a natural waist to show off their figure. I am very conscious of the fact that women have different body types, and I design our bridesmaid dresses to ensure there is something for everyone.

What style of bridesmaid dress is trending this year?
Chiffon styles are a big trend this year. It's a style that is perfect for all seasons because it has a light airy quality about it, and the sheerness and layers of the fabric really showcase the rich colours of the dress.

What colours are trending this year?

A neutral palette has been on trend for some time now, like blush, bellini, fawn, champagne; however we are starting to see a shift towards, slate blue, french blue, mallard, and crimson.  We have also seen many bridal parties doing a graduated color story, for instance, dove grey, slate, graphite to charcoal.

What accessories are on-trend for bridesmaids?
Minimal jewellery is always the best choice so as to not distract from the dress. My advice is to always keep it classic and modern.

Any styles or trends to avoid?
Avoid the trends that don’t relate to your wedding.  Your bridesmaids' style should compliment your wedding dress and the other elements of the wedding to keep everything cohesive.

What do you think of bridesmaid dresses that don’t match?
Mixing and matching bridesmaids' styles is a great idea for bigger bridal parties to add diversity, especially if you have girls with varying body types.  Be cautious when selecting varying styles as to keep some sort of cohesion in the look.  Try different necklines in the same fabrication or combination fabrics in the same colour to keep a uniformed look.
