Sneak peek: JONES Spring Issue 5

ARTWORK NATHAN JOHNSON/BLACKLIST STUDIO ARTWORK NATHAN JOHNSON/BLACKLIST STUDIO

Spring, you are finally here! Say so long to the winter chill and WELCOME to the season of the new.

Scrolling through Instagram over the last few months, I saw just about everyone I know sunning themselves across Europe in bikinis, floaty dresses and sandals while here it’s been bomber jackets, scarves and oversized knits in many parts of Australia.

It is such a magical time of year and, to celebrate, we’ve invited super creative Nathan Johnson of Blacklist

Studio to sprinkle some magic across our pages. Meet Nathan on page 28 and prepare to be surprised and delighted by his artwork.

Speaking of spring, when everything’s in bloom, did you know that 500,000 of us visit the David Jones Flower Show every year and – wait for it – 150,000 flowers from 40 different plants are sourced for it? It takes 23 florists 9000 hours of work to set up and 5000 floral foam bricks to help the flowers go the distance. The show runs for 10 days

(31 August–10 September), so don’t miss it!

We are proud this issue to welcome the talented Byrne siblings – actor Rose and George, a photographer with an eye for capturing desolate beauty in an unexpected painterly style. Earlier this year I saw Rose in David Mamet’s Speed the Plow and the minute she stepped on the stage, she owned it and was funny as hell.

But what I really love about her is that, when I emailed her to ask if we could feature her and her talented bro (kind of crushing on him, shh) she was genuinely excited and didn’t skip a beat before saying YES! George sees things differently to the rest of us and if you don’t know him, get to know him and his work, pronto. Rose also has a little secret to reveal, so turn to page 84 to find out.

Not long ago I received a beautiful handwritten letter from one of our readers, Helen O’Reilly, about the day in 1948 when Dior came to town and changed fashion forever. Like Helen, we are so excited about the epic Dior exhibition at the NGV, so turn to page 114 to read our story and catch a sneak peek.

And don’t miss David Jones’ exclusive Dior POP-UP at the Bourke Street, Melbourne store, where you’ll be able to shop current ready-to-wear as designed by the brand’s first female artistic director, Maria Grazia Chiuri (on 25 August–25 September).

I’m loving the mix of heritage and the NOW intermingling at David Jones. There’s a revolution going on – it’s David Jones as it always has been, but it’s something extra exciting and with more emotion than ever.
