This week the world lost an iconic figure in the fashion industry. Oscar de la Renta, one of this era's most celebrated and legendary fashion designers, lost his battle with cancer at the age of 82.
Oscar de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, and spent his childhood on that tropical island filled with colour, flowers and sunshine, which was a major inspiration to the bright palettes and beautiful patterns of his designs today.
As the Dominican Republic's best known native son, perhaps one of Oscar's greatest accomplishments was in building La Casa del Nino, an orphanage and school for the children of La Romana. La Casa del Nino cares for 1,200 children on a daily basis, providing schooling up to eight grade and daycare for newborns on up so that their mothers can work.
Today, Oscar de la Renta is one of the world's leading luxury goods firms. The company was established in 1965, and currently produces a full line of women's accessories, bridal, home products, childrenswear and beauty, in addition to its signature women's ready-to-wear collection.
The Oscar de la Renta bridal collection launched in 2006, featuring extraordinary embroideries and beautiful fabrics, from silk duchess to French Alencon lace. This utterly feminine and romantic collection also includes elegant accessories, such as veils, shoes and bags.
