In celebration of the label’s recent arrival in store, we sat down with founder and designer Johnny Schembri to talk art, design and Selena Gomez’s killer sense of style.
JONES: In 2009 you launched BY JOHNNY at the Fringe Markets with only ten pieces. How has your brand evolved?
Johnny Schembri: When I first started at the markets I was designing on a piece-by-piece basis, but once I started rolling out collections the brand began to build its aesthetic and slowly grow. What started as a few miniskirts has today grown into a collection of 40-50 bold and contemporary garments.
J: Who is the BY JOHNNY woman?
JS: Over the years I’ve grown with the BY JOHNNY woman and watched her evolve with the brand. Today, the BY JOHNNY customer is very much a modern, sophisticated and strong woman who appreciates effortless contemporary fashion. The most rewarding feeling is seeing my designs and hard work come to life on inspiring individuals.
J: Why did you want to start your own label?
JS: I was always very creative growing up and loved art as well as design and technology. I originally wanted to do architecture but I didn't get the marks. At this point I turned my attention to fashion and entered into fashion design school. I always loved the idea of designing a product and selling it.
J: What are three pieces every woman should have in her wardrobe?
JS: A great-fitting pencil skirt, whether it be printed or plain. A silk camisole, an essential that can be easily dressed up or down, and a go-to cocktail dress; something that can be worn across the seasons.
J: How would you describe your label?
JS: Our signature bold aesthetic is very unique, mixing delicate body contouring with sharp shapes, strong silhouettes and bold graphics. Each season offers a strong and concise image and message that is very much bold and brave.
J: Your designs have been worn by Jessica Alba, Kourtney Kardashian and Isla Fisher. Are there any celebrities who really inspire you with their style?
JS: I’m loving Selena Gomez at the moment. She is a strong woman who has a great sense of style.
J: What’s in store for the future of BY JOHNNY?
JS: The brand is currently going through a phase of development and we are focusing on our growth strategy. Right now the international marketplace is very much in our sights, and I’m very excited to see what the future has in store for us overseas.
