How To Wear Dark Lipstick

Trending this winter is the season-apropos dark lip. From brick red to burgundy to dark cherry, there's a wide range to play with but make no mistake, this makeup trend ain't for wallflowers.

Once the provenance of goths and vampires, dark lipstick has taken a sophisticated turn but still makes a bold and arresting statement. Models have been snapped with dark lips on and off the runway, and celebrities like Kate Bosworth, Vanessa Hudgens and Jennifer Lawrence have been sporting the trend on the red carpet.

For those of us with somewhat less glamorous lives, dark lipstick is simply the perfect foil to pale (or at least, not quite as sunkissed) winter skin.

Keen to try the trend? Read on for tips on how to wear it this winter.

1) Pair with bold brows.

Nix the old practice of focusing on only one feature of your face and pair statement lips with striking, well-groomed brows.

2) But keep your eye makeup to a minimum.

Skip the dark and heavy eye makeup — the strongest looks for this trend are with either several coats of mascara or a clean flick of black eyeliner.

3) Keep the face matte and contour-free.

A flawless face is a must when wearing dark lipstick to get the full effect. Balance your foundation with the texture of your lipstick but a mattifying foundation will do the trick.

4) Experiment with a range of colours that suit your skin tone.

As a rule of thumb, those with warmer skin tones suit red and berry hues best, while cooler skin tones generally look better with purple and dark cherry colours.

5) Use a lip liner.

Avoid stains or smudges (otherwise you might end up looking like a freshly-fed vampire) and always line your lips prior to applying your dark lipstick.
