How to treat acne

When it comes to acne, most of us shudder and think back to our teenage years, but acne affects adolescents and adults alike.

Here's what you need to know about acne and how to treat it:

What is the cause of acne?
The underlying cause of acne can be traced from fluctuations in hormone levels. An overproduction of sebum in oil glands can cause it to become trapped in pores and accelerate the growth of bacteria. This can result in the formation of pimples (often to referred to as ‘breakouts’ or ‘blemishes’). And at this advanced stage, sebum continues to accumulate within the pore and oxidises, causing further inflammation on the surface of the skin.

What are some tips when targeting congested or problematic skin?
"It is important to treat the entire affected area (usually this is the entire face, not just one spot)," says Tracey Beeby, Global Training Manager of Ultraceuticals. "We have just launched our 'Ultra Clear’ range - a high performance acne management system that has been clinically tested and works to reduce the appearance of skin congestion, blemishes and reduce future skin breakouts."

What ingredients are in this range and how does it help my acne-prone skin?
“Powerful ingredients such as Mandelic Acid and Salicylic Acid work to deeply exfoliate & decongest pores. Clove Oil is another powerful ingredient that is an antioxidant and may inhibit lipid oxidation in the acne development cycle," says Beeby. "The beauty of these ‘power ingredients’ is that they deliver true results without the harsh side effects (such as severe skin dryness or irritation), that are often associated with mass market acne management products."

What kind of facial treatments are recommended?
A Vita-CLEAR Performance Facial is a deep cleansing treatment that incorporates Salicylic Acid (BHA) and potent antioxidants to penetrate deep into the pores to help clear congestion. It works to calm inflamed skin, help control excessive oiliness and mattify the complexion. Adding microdermabrasion to this treatment has also demonstrated excellent results. Vita-CLEAR Performance Facial treatments are available from qualified Ultraceuticals skin therapists at David Jones beauty rooms.
