Your make-up will look better if you do all of these things

If you sometimes wonder why your make-up looks a little less than perfect, we feel your frustration. It’s one thing to find the right products, it’s quite another to execute a flawless look. Thankfully, there are a few simple things you can do to get the most out of your make-up. We’re here to tell you how.

It seems obvious, but starting with a clean slate is paramount. Washing and moisturising your face before putting on your make-up will remove any dirt and oils clogging your pores, resulting in a fresh, blank canvas to work with. Even if you think your face feels clean, it’s important not to skip this step.

If you find yourself retouching your make-up all day long, you need primer in your life. You might think it’s unnecessary, but this product is a girl’s best friend. Not only does it prepare the skin for your foundation – by helping it to stick – it also keeps your makeup looking flawless from morning to night, limiting the number of times you need to powder your nose, or re-rouge your cheeks. Many primers also help to even out your skin tone, providing colour correction before you’ve even applied your foundation and concealer – can’t argue with that.

There’s no point investing in amazing products if you don’t use them right. We know that applying foundation with your fingers seems logical in theory, but it’s usually a disaster when you try it in real life – hello unsightly smearing. The same rule applies for incorrectly-shaped contouring brushes; don’t even get us started. Thankfully, for every make-up product there is a suitable applicator. Knowing when you should replace your cosmetics is one of life’s great mysteries. So if you’re guilty of using your mascara until it gets to that sad and clumpy stage, you’re not alone. Even so, any product that comes into contact with your face – and in turn, bacteria – should be replaced on a regular basis. This will keep things hygienic, and also keep your makeup looking its very best. If you’re not sure when to replace what, here’s the general guide:

Foundation: replace once a year.

Concealer: replace every 12-18 months.

Eyeliner: replace every 3-6 months.

Mascara: replace every 3 months.

Eye shadows: replace creams once a year, and powders every two years.

Blush and bronzer: replace every 2 years.

Lipstick: replace once a year.

Any self-respecting make-up artist will tell you: clean your brushes once a week – at minimum. Making this a habit will extend the life of bristles, eliminate unwanted product build-up, and ensure ease of application. Because brush hairs are porous, they hold onto oils, debris and bacteria – three things that are sure to sabotage your look. Simply put: be good to your brushes, and they’ll be good to you.

It's one thing to know how to apply make-up, but it’s just as important to know how to (properly) take it off. Never underestimate the importance of removing your cosmetics before you go to bed. Not only does sleeping with makeup on feel kind of gross, it also inhibits your skin’s ability to rest and rejuvenate. That’s why it’s important to invest in a quality make-up remover.
