The Season's Key Makeup Look

For the upcoming autumn winter season, when the days become cooler and darker, it might be tempting to go the same way with your makeup, i.e. heavy and dramatic; but try getting that winter feeling by adding a velvety texture to your look instead while still keeping it nude and full of light.

Carol Mackie, M.A.C. Cosmetics' Senior Artist, created this exact look for the David Jones Autumn/Winter 2016 catalogue and reveals how a velvety nude finish is achieved with our old friend, strobing

What makes this look the key trend this Autumn Winter season?

Soft warm autumn colours compliment the season – what really ties this look together and makes it key to trend is the skin. Skin that looks like the best version of yourself without looking like there is anything there. It’s all about sculpting well-framed features with a natural matte finish.

This look is all about strobing; what are your top three tips for anyone trying out this trend for the first time?

  • Make sure the skin is really prepped first – apply M.A.C Lightful C Marine Bright Formula Softening Lotion to soften and prepare the skin for moisturiser.
  • Add a touch of M.A.C Strobe Cream to your foundation to give an overall natural radiance.
  • Lightly buff M.A.C Cream Colour Base in Pearl, Luna, and Bronze (depending on your skin tone) over the cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose, over the cupids bow and to the inner corner of the eye.  Add a touch more Strobe Cream dabbed lightly over the cheekbones, layering product to give multi-dimensional highlights to the face.

How would you adapt this look for work and a night out?

This look works well for day but to take it from day to play, add a touch more colours from the Eye Shadow x 9 Palette below the eye rather than wrapping it around the eye in a traditional way. Add M.A.C Feline Pencil into the waterline and between the lashes, squeeze the eyes together so that the colour transfers to the top waterline and also moves naturally, giving a more worn in look to the make up that keeps it looking modern.

For a different night look lightly buff out the eyes with a M.A.C #217 Brush to soften and diffuse. Add M.A.C Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in Dance With Me to the lips - the perfect colour to party!!

How to get the look
  1. Create illuminated skin by adding a hint of Strobe Cream to cheekbones and temples. Brush Prep + Prime Highlighter Pen in Light Boost down the bridge of the nose and on the cupid’s bow at the top of your lip.

  2. Apply Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation to the face and blend down the neck. Use an angled blush brush to sweep Mineralize Skinfinish under cheekbones and jawline, and on the temples.

  3. Fill in brows with Eye Brows Pencil in Lingering, brush upwards and set into place with Brow Set in Clear.

  4. Create smokey eyes with the Eyes Times Nine Palette in Amber. Use the darkest brown to line the eyes on the outer corners, sweep a midbrown shade across the lid and out towards the end of the brow, and a lighter shade to dust over the centre of the lid and the inner corners.

  5. Finish the look with a swipe of Velvetease Lip Pencil in Promise Me.
