When it comes to your summer skincare regime,
prevention is better than cure, so sun protection is essential.
As a pale, freckled individual I know the importance of sunscreen more than most. And, as a beauty writer, it’s my duty to inform you that it is the most essential and accessible age-proofing product. Getting sun care wrong can have serious repercussions not only for your appearance, but also for your health. So here’s how to get it right and ensure you’re not left red faced after a day in the sun.
Start with a sunblock – duh! – such as Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery, which is rich in antioxidant white tea and polyphenols and ridiculously smooth and satisfying to apply. The best time to apply sunscreen is 20 minutes before going out into the sun, and every two hours after that, especially if you’ve been in the water.
Come sunset, it’s time for some after-sun care. To foster your skin’s recovery from salt or chlorinated water and reduce redness (if you’ve missed a spot!), your go-to is Clarins Booster Repair. Add a couple of drops to your moisturiser, foundation or mask and let its calming and soothing properties work their magic while you enjoy a post-beach cocktail.
If you are planning on heading to the bar, consider using a tinted moisturiser or hydrating foundation to refresh and revive your skin. Try a hydrating cushion compact like Shu Uemura Stage Performer Fresh Cushion Foundation to blur pores and even skin tone or, for something more substantial, Napoleon Perdis Foundation Stick Broad Spectrum is a hassle-free, easy-to-apply option to chuck in your beach bag.
For the finishing touches, Lanolips and Aesop both do a decent line in lip balms (Lanolips Tinted Balm and Aesop Protective Lip Balm) and Sisley’s Sisleÿa Global Anti-Age Hand Care will keep your mitts moisturised and protected. For any damage already done, target dark spots with a spot corrector like Shiseido’s White Lucent On Makeup Spot Correcting Serum.
If you are unlucky enough to get caught in the sun and get burnt, remember the pain and peeling will fade, but those burns add up over time so do your best to avoid them. And fun fact: if you’re lucky enough to be heading to Europe or the tropics for your holiday, be sure to remember to apply that sunscreen on the plane. When you’re in an airplane you’re closer to the sun so UV damage is at its greatest. Whatever your summer holiday destination, if you haven’t yet found your sun-sense saviours, we suggest here and now is definitely the time to start.
