From boys to beauty legends
Jeremy and Keston Muijs of Grown Alchemist
Most of us have heard of Coco Chanel, Elizabeth Arden and Esteé Lauder. They’re the women who pioneered some of the most famous beauty brands of the twentieth century. But a few other, lesser known names have been responsible for a few other beauty empires that are just as legendary. And some of these lesser known names are men. From the launch of La Prairie in the ’30s, to the rise of Aesop in the late ’80s, boys have been making their mark on the industry at large, responsible for some of the most innovative skin care and cosmetics that we enjoy today.
Behind the following great beauty brands stand a couple of pretty great men; we’re here to share their stories.
GROWN ALCHEMIST | Jeremy and Keston Muijs
The heart of Melbourne-based Grown Alchemist lies in the philosophy of brothers Jeremy and Keston Muijs, two businessmen who launched their new generation of skincare formulations in the late ’90s. Driven by their desire to help individuals achieve real beauty results without harmful chemicals, the pair set out to revolutionise the traditional approach to skin, body and hair care. Today, the brand is celebrated for its scientific approach to organic beauty – delivered in editorial-worthy packaging. Better yet, all products are manufactured in Australia, with locally-sourced ingredients where possible.

LA MER | Dr. Max Huber
It’s not every day a German-born aerospace physicist invents a face cream. But legend has it that’s exactly how La Mer began. When Dr. Max Huber suffered burns in an experiment gone wrong, he became determined to find a way to heal his wounds. Turning to the sea for inspiration, Huber fermented nutrient-rich sea kelp with other natural ingredients. It is said that 12 years and 6,000 experiments later, Crème de la Mer was born – visibly restoring the physicist’s skin – the rest is history. Today, La Mer remains the crème-de-la-crème of, well, creams, offering a collection of lotions infused with Dr. Huber’s original miracle broth.
To this day, Crème de la Mer remains the brand’s most famous offering. Born from the sea, the legendary cream has the power to transform the look of skin. Firmness improves, and lines, wrinkles and pores become less apparent, resulting in skin that looks virtually ageless. What more could you want from a small pot of face cream?
MAC | Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo
The brainchild of photographer Frank Toskan and beauty salon owner Frank Angelo, the very first MAC products were cooked up in a kitchen by the entrepreneurs themselves. Frustrated by the lack of colours available for their creative photo shoots, the pair took the matter, and the makeup, into their own hands – the idea worked. Officially launched from a single counter at a department store in Toronto in 1984, MAC has since taken the industry by storm, celebrated for its range that combines street savvy with glamorous style and panache.
To add some MAC magic to your beauty repertoire, try MAC's latest Colour Rocker line, instant icons that make a scene, delivering a hit of colour to your look. Amp it up with lime green, bright golden yellow, fiery fuchsia and rich, riotous teal.
AESOP | Dennis Paphitis
For skincare with a side of philosophical wisdom you can’t go past Aesop. Known for its sexy pharmaceutical-style packaging, the label’s objective has remained the same since its launch in 1987: to formulate skin, hair and body care products of the finest quality, investigating widely to source plant-based and laboratory-made ingredients, and using only those with a proven record of safety and efficacy. Though Aesop hand wash bottles are immediately recognisable, the man behind the cult brand is a little more elusive. A former philosophy student, Dennis Paphitis has assumed a silent role since Aesop’s launch, running his business like a machine that’s been well-oiled to perfection – reflective in the brand’s meticulous attention-to-detail oriented aesthetic.
To invigorate your skincare routine, explore The Avid Explorer range. Featuring Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash and Rejuvenate Intensive Body Balm, the collection will soothe and soften your skin, simultaneously enhancing your bathroom’s visual appeal.
LA PRAIRIE | Professor Paul Niehans
La Prairie began in Switzerland with one miraculous discovery and one man; Professor Paul Niehans. After pioneering anti-aging cellular therapy in the early ’30s, the doctor shared his treatments with visitors at his Clinique La Prairie; skin therapies so revolutionary they soon became a cult secret. As they say, the rest is history. What began as a scientific experiment has blossomed into one of the world most-loved skincare brands. In their quest for ageless beauty and infinite luxury, La Prairie continues to go beyond ordinary skincare, incepting aging at its very source, just as Professor Niehans’ had intended.
