“A girl can’t read that sort of thing without her lipstick”

– Holly Golightly

Red lipstick is beauty’s answer to the little black dress. It’s timeless, elegant, sexy, and you can wear it day or night.

Whether you’re heading out on the town, lunching with friends or collecting your dry cleaning, a red lip brings the chic. So it’s no wonder so many film sirens have rocked the red-lip look over the years.

In homage to one of beauty’s most powerful style statements, we revisit six of our favourite red lip moments on screen.

For her date with Richard Gere in Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts donned a floor length opera gown with a crimson lip to match. It was the moment that her character, Vivian Ward, became a lady, proving just how transformative the right shade of red lipstick can be.

When Anne Hathaway hit Paris Fashion Week in The Devil Wears Prada, you knew she’d made it – her lipstick said it all. Her crimson pout was the quintessential statement lip, symbolising her character Andy’s newfound confidence and poise.

Judy Garland’s plump red lips set the standard for classic beauty in the ’40s classic Meet Me in St Louis. Worn with pinned curls and long, curled lashes, this orange-red shade is the epitome of elegance. Definitely one to try for your next evening soirée.

Anjelica Huston in The Addams Family

Morticia Addams wasn’t the most obvious beauty style icon, but her red lips sure packed a punch. Proving that more is sometimes more, Anjelica Huston’s vivid pout in the ’90s cult classic highlighted her character’s undeniable sass and aplomb. It takes a certain kind of daring to pull off a red lip like this, and Morticia proved the breathtaking result is worth the risk.

Audrey Hepburn proved the life-affirming power of red lips in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, refusing to read a scandal in the paper without first reapplying her pout. We can totally relate. Red lipstick isn’t just about looking good; it’s about being ready for anything.

Susan Sarandon in Thelma and Louise

What’s a pre-road trip selfie without a statement lip? Not worth taking, obviously. Before hitting the road in the cult classic Thelma & Louise, Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis pose together red lipped and fancy free. In this moment of film glory, the red lip represents freedom and liberation. Proof that the right shade of red has the power to set a woman free.

Inspired by our silver screen starlets, we’ve curated a selection of our most alluring crimson shades.
