5 homegrown beauty brands you need to know

Homegrown skin care story hero image

If you want to broaden your beauty horizons, why not start close to home?

It’s easy to be seduced by a luxurious face cream from a faraway land. We get it. We all have those kinds of products in our bathroom drawers. But the reality is, you don’t have to cross an ocean to find cult beauty brands.

From the uniquely formulated ranges by Aesop, to the glorious botanicals of Grown Alchemist, our current range of Australian skincare has never looked – or felt – better.

We’ve rounded up our favourite homegrown beauty brands and a cult product from each that we can’t live without.

Cult product: Aesop Fabulous Face Oil

Points for: the deliriously good scent, and the fact that it makes you feel like you’ve brought a dayspa home with you. Hydrates brilliantly without leaving you with an oil slick.

The brand: We all know and love Aesop for its minimalist aesthetic – let’s be honest, some buy it for the sexiness of its packaging alone. Founded in Melbourne in 1987, the brand is committed to formulating skin, hair and body care products of the finest quality. Part beauty part science, Aesop products are the result of investigations into plant-based and laboratory-made ingredients; the perfect collaboration between Mother Nature and human ingenuity.

Cult product: Grown Alchemist Body Exfoliant

Points for: being a great unisex gift idea, the subtle minty scent, and the lack of nasty chemicals. This formulation leaves your skin baby-smooth.

The brand: Want to achieve really good results without really harmful chemicals? Grown Alchemist offers a new generation of organic skincare formulations, featuring natural technologies that have revolutionised anti-aging, body and haircare. While not all of us are familiar with the ins-and-outs of the science behind the collagens, elastin-boosting actives, advanced peptides and powerful antioxidants within this range, we do know they have been proven to improve our skin’s texture and appearance. What more could you want?

Cult product: The Original 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm

Points for: nostalgia, natural ingredients and the fact that it actually keeps your lips hydrated for hours.

The brand: It all began when Kirsten Carriol, a beauty industry veteran, couldn’t find the right lip balm (we’ve all been there). So she decided to make her own. Since her father had always told her that the molecular structure of lanolin was the secret to skin moisturisation, she figured that was a good place to start. A 100% natural substance found on the wool of sheep, lanolin is the animal-cruelty-free by product of wool washing after shearing. With thanks to Lanolips, it’s also one of our all-time favourite lip balms. We’re also a little bit in love with the brand’s hand and body moisturisers. Carriol’s dad was right, nothing moisturises the skin quite like Lanolin does.

Cult product: KOSMEA Skin Clinic Certified Organic Rose Hip

Points for: its Australian certified organic seal of approval. If you're going to try a rosehip oil, make it this one - known for being the best in the business.

The brand: It was a handful of rosehips that planted the seed of brand Kosmea. Its founder Marie Kapetanakis, a DIY beauty addict, started experimenting with the natural ingredient after a trip to a rose farm in 1993 – she’s been making effective, organic  skincare ever since.

Cult product: KORA Hydrating Day & Night Cream

Points for: its fresh citrus scent  - yes, it does smell almost edible - and the fact that a little goes a long way.

The brand: Taking a holistic approach to skincare, Miranda Kerr’s KORA Organics are designed to enrich your skin and spirit. Featuring the natural healing and protective powers of organic formulations such as Noni Extract, Rosehip Oil, Sea Buckthorn Oil and Green Tea, KORA products will make you feel beautiful from the inside out. The best part? Energised with Rose Quartz, the KORA range is also infused with the vibration of love. We’re down with that.
