“My friend and I were talking about sun protection gear and I suggested that we could be the UV boys.” Sometimes the silliest ideas turn into the best things. Having only started a year-and-a-half ago, 19-year-old Emmanuel John has toured around Australia, played Splendour In The Grass, and this summer is set to perform alongside the likes of RL Grime and Jamie xx.

Tell us about your style.

Your style shows who you are; I like a suit and tie every now and then; but a funny Justin Bieber shirt I’d wear too.

Whose style do you admire?

There’s this artist called Rejjie Snow and he has really cool fashion sense. He’ll wear something grimy or sports-like, and at other times something more high-end and clean-cut.

What’s your onstage style like?

During festivals I wear all white. I just feel angelic, I suppose. I wear white pants, a white shirt, and I have these cool light-up shoes.

What does UV Boi sound like?

It’s melodic but 808 driven. It’s bassy, but I like to put more emotion in it rather than having just a party track.

What are you working on?

At the moment I’m working on my EP. The whole story behind it is about finding love before it all ends.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Flying Lotus, Chrome Sparks and MF Doom.

What’s the ultimate?

I guess we all want to create the best music we can, and if that takes us somewhere then I can’t complain. I wish to travel the world and do music; so far I’ve been able to travel Australia.
