Information about your breast screen

A Breast Screen(screening mammogram) is an x-ray that can detect breast cancer early, well before you or your doctor can see or feel anything and reassure you that your breast health is okay. A screening mammogram cannot stop you from getting breast cancer, but more women survive breast cancer today thanks to early detection and better treatments. It is strongly recommended that women between the ages of 50-69 have a breastscreen every two years, as this is the age group most at risk of developing breast cancer. Women in their 40’s and over 70 are also eligible for the free service.

Yes! David Jones Rose Clinics in partnership with BreastScreen New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria provide free breast screens for women over 40.

On arrival you will be welcomed by our receptionist and be asked to complete and sign forms about your personal history and gain consent. A female radiographer will take you through to the mammography room and will explain the procedure. She will assist you into the correct positioning for two views of each breast to be taken. The procedure is considered extremely safe and is undertaken by professionally trained radiographers who are supported by specifically trained health staff. Upon completion two doctors independently examine each image, so there is always a second opinion.

Your results should be mailed to you within 10 working days. Your results will also be sent to your doctor unless you have requested otherwise. BreastScreen staff will phone you if they need to discuss anything further.
