Information about your breast screen
| |

The best time to treat breast cancer is when it is still very small. It may be years before you or your doctor notice anything is wrong. A breast screen (screening mammogram) can find problems early. A screening mammogram can not stop you from getting breast cancer, but it can give you a better chance of successful treatment.
| |

You will be welcomed by our BreastScreen VIC receptionist, asked to fill in a form and then shown to a private change room where you will undress to the waist. A radiographer will take your screening mammogram. Each breast is positioned carefully on the screening machine and the pictures are taken. Two specifically trained doctors will examine the screening mammogram.
| |

BreastScreen VIC is a government funded organisation set up to provide a free screening mammogram every two years to women aged 50 to 69. BreastScreen VIC is part of a nationwide program to provide high quality screening mammograms. As BreastScreen gives priority to women aged 50 to 69 years, women aged 40 to 49 and 70 years and over may have to wait for a suitable appointment time to become available.
| |

Your results should be sent to you in about 2 weeks. Please advise BreastScreen VIC if you do not receive them. Your results will also be sent to your doctor unless you have requested otherwise. If you need further tests, BreastScreen VIC will give you more information when they contact you.
